Plumbing & Ventilation FAQs

Marine plumbing systems can include freshwater pumps, washdown pumps, bilge pumps, hoses, fittings, valves, thru-hulls, drains, strainers, tanks, sanitation components, faucets, and related hardware. The exact setup depends on the vessel and its onboard water, drainage, sanitation, and pumping systems.

Start by identifying the pump’s intended application, such as freshwater delivery, washdown, bilge removal, or sanitation. Then compare flow rate, pressure, voltage, inlet and outlet sizes, mounting requirements, and manufacturer specifications. A pump should be selected for the specific system rather than simply choosing the highest-capacity option.

Check the inside diameter of the existing hose and the connection size specified by the pump, valve, thru-hull, or other component. Marine plumbing fittings can use different connection types and sizes, so verify dimensions and specifications before ordering rather than relying on appearance alone.

Proper ventilation helps circulate air through enclosed areas and can help manage heat, moisture, and odors. Depending on the vessel, ventilation equipment may be used in cabins, heads, storage areas, machinery spaces, and other compartments. Certain spaces can have specific ventilation requirements, so equipment should be selected for its intended application.
