Start by understanding your vessel's voltage, electrical loads, battery capacity, and existing system before adding or replacing components.
How do I choose the right marine battery charger?
Consider your battery type, battery-bank size, number of banks, system voltage, charger output, and where the charger will be installed. Battery chemistry is especially important because charging requirements can differ between flooded lead-acid, AGM, gel, and lithium batteries. Always verify that the charger is compatible with your batteries.
What should I check before replacing a boat electrical component?
Check the existing component's voltage, amperage or capacity, dimensions, mounting configuration, wiring, terminal type, circuit protection, battery chemistry where applicable, and manufacturer specifications. Matching the physical size alone doesn't guarantee electrical compatibility.
Do I need an inverter or an inverter/charger?
An inverter provides AC power from your batteries. An inverter/charger combines inverter functionality with battery charging when an appropriate external AC source is available. The better option depends on your boat's electrical system, shore-power setup, battery bank, and how you use AC equipment aboard.
